With dwindling supplies of fossil fuels and the need for cleaner, low-carbon power, sustainable sources of energy are essential. That’s where renewable energy – such as wind, wave and solar energy – comes in. There’s a huge call for skilled professionals to develop new and emerging techniques to harness the world’s sustainable resources.

This is a relatively new and growing area – more than 70,000 jobs could be created over the next decade

There are roles for apprentices and graduates, as well as experienced professionals

The industry

The UK government wants 15% of the country’s energy to come from renewable sources by 2020. The renewable energy industry is meeting this challenge through a broad range of sustainable sources – and there’s further research and development happening all the time. The industry therefore offers tremendous innovation and variety, with new opportunities appearing steadily. For example, the number of people employed in offshore wind has doubled since 2010. A Renewable energy engineer can expect a starting salary of £20,000. Experienced professionals can earn £80,000 per year. The industry includes:

  • Wind energy
  • Solar energy
  • Tidal energy
  • Wave energy
  • Hydropower
  • Biomass and clean coal
  • Onshore and offshore
